The symbolism of the Alexander coat of arms
The symbols on the Alexander family crest include a Gaelic harp – a symbol of peace and contemplation, a gold star representing piety, wisdom and virtue, and a crescent moon to denote being ‘enlightened and honoured by his sovereign’. These elements are separated by a split black and white chevron (meaning ‘rafter’ in french) to signify safety and protection.
The origin of the Alexander name
The Alexander name has a rich and powerful history, originating from the ancient Greek “Alexandros”—meaning “defender of the people”—and made legendary by Alexander the Great. Brought to Scotland by the Normans, the name evolved from “Alessandre” into “Alaxandair” and “Alasdair” in Gaelic and was carried by three Scottish kings between 1107 and 1286. The Clan MacAllistair have ancient links to the Kintyre peninsula and the coast of Antrim, as well as Viking era Norwegian connections. The name later became anglicised to Alexander.
