The origin of the name Adams

Adams is a patronymic surname meaning "son of Adam," originating from the Hebrew word for "earth" or "man." Widely recorded across medieval England and Scotland, the family established prominent branches throughout Anglo-Saxon and Nordic territories.

The symbolism of the Adams coat of arms

The shield displays a prominent golden heart centered on a field of bold red (gules), surrounded by three gold cross crosslets fitchee. The heart signifies sincerity, devotion, and charity, while the cross crosslets denote steadfast faith and Christian duty. The Latin motto scroll reads In cruce salus, translating to "Salvation in the cross." These arms are officially preserved in British armorial registers. This specific armorial design—featuring the central gold heart with three cross-crosslets—was officially confirmed in British and Irish heraldic records on September 6, 1854. It was registered by Sir John Bernard Burke, Ulster King of Arms, for the Adams of Northlands family branch (County Cavan, Ireland), whose lineage traces back through prominent 17th- and 18th-century landowners and public figures.
