The surname Acosta is an ancient Iberian topographic name with deep historical roots across Spain and Portugal. It derives directly from the Latin costa, meaning "side" or "rib", which in Old Spanish and Portuguese evolved to describe someone residing near a coastline, riverbank, or steep hillslope (a costa). The earliest documented ancestral seats (casas solares) were established during the High Middle Ages in the northern regions of Galicia and Burgos before expanding southward across the Iberian Peninsula during the Reconquista. Following Spanish and Portuguese maritime exploration in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the lineage spread extensively to the Canary Islands and the Americas, solidifying Acosta as one of the most distinguished and widely borne family names in the Hispanic world.

The symbolism of the Acosta coat of arms

16th-Century Stone Evidence: Physical, sculpted evidence of the Acosta ribs survives in Spanish architectural heritage. A notable 16th-century example is carved into the stone courtyard of the ancient University of Santa Catalina in El Burgo de Osma, displaying the personal arms sculpted in 1550 for the prominent Spanish prelate Bishop Pedro Álvarez de Acosta (1484–1563).

Artist’s note: I took inspiration from this carving which clearly depicts the use of rib bones as an iconic symbol of the name. This carved version of the crest was most likely specific to the Bishop himself. This Acosta family crest is certainly one of the most original and intriguing of the designs in heraldic tradition.
